Our friend Carlo Volpi sent us this proposal, which he is sending to all pacifist and nonviolent organizations in an attempt to reach the whole of Europe. Pressenza is publishing it and gladly supports it.
Subject: Contemporary events in European capitals on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Liberation from Nazi-Fascism, to affirm a firm commitment against war and in favor of peace in Europe.
We call on all organizations of the Italian and European peace movement that identify with the conclusions of the Vienna Conference and other initiatives for peace in Ukraine to join in a large public mobilization planned for May 9, 2025, a symbolic date marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Europe from Nazi-fascism.
Objective of the mobilization: To promote peace in Ukraine and on the European continent through dialogue and nonviolent means, to counter the growing war economy and the increase in arms investments, reaffirming the value of cooperation between peoples and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
Outline of the proposal: We propose the organization of four simultaneous demonstrations in European capitals symbolically involved in the process of growing military tension:
Institutional and civil participation: Representatives of Italian and European institutions parliamentarians, regional presidents and councilors as well as representatives of civil society, academia, religion, and culture who wish to express their support for an immediate ceasefire and peacebuilding will be invited to participate.
Diplomatic support: The Italian and Vatican consular network and diplomatic representations are recommended to provide full political and logistical support to the delegations, facilitating all organizational aspects, particularly for the more complex trips to Moscow and Kyiv.
This proposal stems from a deep need to build a Europe that is faithful to its history of resistance to totalitarianism and capable of offering the world a model of coexistence based on peace, justice, and cooperation.
There will not be another opportunity.
